A frenum is a muscular stretch of tissue that connects and holds other tissues in place. Occasionally a frenum might be exceptionally short, thick, or tight, or may extend too far down along the tongue or the gum and results in lip tie or tongue tie. When a frenum is positioned in such a way it may interfere with the normal alignment of teeth, speech or constricts the movement of the tongue or lips. It can be corrected by a surgery called a frenectomy. A frenectomy is simply the removal of a frenum in the mouth.
There are two frena (the plural form of frenum) in the mouth that can sometimes obstruct normal function and are candidates for frenectomies. These frena are called:
Lingual Frenum: which connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth
Maxillary Labial Frenum: which connects the inside of your upper lip to your gums just above your upper two front teeth.
Sometimes, the lingual frenum can run all the way to the tip of the tongue, causing a person to be “tongue-tied.” If the attachment is extends all the way to the tip of the tongue, then a frenectomy may be the only choice to give the child normal tongue function.
A lingual frenectomy is a simple procedure and involves numbing the tongue with an anesthetic. A small incision is then made which will free the tongue from the floor of the mouth. The incision then will be sewn up to allow the tissue to heal.
A soft tissue laser is an alternative method to to address the issue. A soft tissue laser does NOT cut but uses light energy to “vaporize” the tissue with very little discomfort. Additionally there is almost no bleeding from the laser procedure. The healing is very quick with less risk of infection.

Hi, I’m Alexander Sizak from Algonquin, Illinois. I’m one of those if it ain’t broke don’t fix it kind of guys. Well, sometimes teeth need fixing and I needed a filling, a crown replaced, and an implant. I haven’t been to a dentist for at least six years. Once again, if it ain’t broke… Well, I did some research online, I checked out multiple businesses – costs are really important to me as I don’t have any insurance but references and that old gut feeling played a major role in my final decision. As of right now I’m midway through the implant procedure. I’ve had a cleaning and x-rays, a filling and a crown replacement all in the last three months. So far, Dr. Khan and his staff; Paula, Lindsay, Jolene, Heidi – I hope I haven’t forgotten anyone; sorry if I did – have exceeded all expectations. Always friendly, always prepared, and most important to me – always professional. I am, as always, very satisfied with the dental work I have done at Dr. Khan's office. He is an excellent dentist, very caring and professional. I appreciate the good explanation he provides for the dental procedures I have had done. The office staff at a doctor's office reflects so much about the practice in general. VERY GOOD. Great customer service, great staff and most importantly Dr. Khan makes the dental procedure seamless. I had an implant done. Price was reasonable and the implant was success. Also, their schedule is great, allowing for visits on Saturdays and after hours, which is great for people with fixed work schedule.
Dr. Khan installed a dental implant in my jaw a couple of months ago, and I am extremely happy with the work. The procedure was completely pain-free, and the healing process has been going very smoothly. Dr. Khan created a temporary crown to attach to the post while the implant mends with the jawbone, which looks very real, and has been non-intrusive in my daily routine. This has been a huge advantage, as many other practices use a dental flipper, which I expect would not preserve gum structure as well, look less natural, and become an annoyance since it sits within a retainer that must be worn, and has to be taken out to eat. In a month or so, I will get the final crown to replace the temporary I have been wearing, and with the high-quality of work done so far and attention to detail, I expect it will look just like a real tooth. Dr. Khan has also been very helpful and understanding with answering my (many) questions and concerns about the procedure and materials used. Highly recommended!

I have had three implants and one bridge completed by Dr Khan. He is prompt, gracious, highly competent and patient. My implants where difficult because of lack of bone. We kept working at it until success was achieved. His staff is friendly and helpful. Any problems after surgery he is reachable by cell phone. I have been to many dentists in my day and he is by far the best!
I initially came to Dr Khan for an implant because he was significantly cheaper than a specialist I had used in my town of Libertyville, IL. I found Dr. Khan was very competent and offered the service of doing both the implant and the crown, something in the past which had required me to visit 2 different doctors.
